Women in Nuclear
Women in Nuclear Global (WiN-Global) is a global organization which was founded in 1993 to support and encourage women working in nuclear industries throughout the world, particularly energy and radiation applications. WiN-Global is a not-for-profit organization with approximately 2500 members in 68 countries.

The Department of Minerals and Energy recognized the need to identify, mobilize and support the involvement of women in various fields utilizing nuclear energy. This culminated in the formation of WiNSA (Women in Nuclear South Africa), which is an organization, that is part of the global organization.

WiNNNR
The Women in Nuclear- NNR (WiNNNR) initiative was officially launched on 29 August 2006 in support of WiNSA.
The key objectives of WiNNNR is to;
  • promote meaningful participation of women in the fields of nuclear energy by creating a national forum and network for women to foster an environment conducive to advancing the empowerment of women in the relevant fields.
  • To interact with the members of the public and educate them on basic radiation protection principles.
  • To provide NNR women with the opportunities to take part in WiN-Global activities
  • Encourage learners in Junior and Secondary schools to consider selecting mathematics, science, engineering and technology related studies at tertiary level

The NNR introduced the WiNNNR initiative to learners and educators at the Science Unlimited Expo 2009. This initiative was well received by the learners and educators at the Expo. The NNR plans to continue to build and strengthen its support for the Women in Nuclear initiative.
