The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) grants Nuclear Vessel Licence to USS SAN JUAN (Nuclear Powered Submarine).

The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) grants Nuclear Vessel Licence to USS SAN JUAN (Nuclear Powered Submarine).

The NNR has granted a Nuclear Vessel Licence - NVL 006 - to the South African Navy who made the application on behalf of the US Navy for the vessel USS San Juan to enter Simon’s Town Naval Base during the period of 25 October 2009 to 15 November 2009.

The NNR received an application for a nuclear vessel licence in August 2009 and after review and assessment found the application to be compliant to all aspects of the regulatory requirements in terms of the section 21 of the National Nuclear Regulator Act (Act No 47 of 1999).

The NNR wishes to inform all stakeholders concerned that to date it has conducted environmental sampling before the arrival of the vessel and will be conducting further sampling in the harbour during berth and after the vessel has left.

The reason for doing this is to ensure that there are no adverse radiological impacts to the Simon’s Town environment due to the USS San Juan vessel.
