- International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS)
The Convention on Nuclear Safety was adopted in Vienna on 17 June 1994 and aims to legally commit participating States operating land-based nuclear power plants to maintain a high level of safety by setting international benchmarks to which States would subscribe. The CNS entered into force on 24 October 1996 and as of 13 August 2009, there were 65 signatories and 66 contracting parties to the CNS. All countries with operating nuclear power plants are now parties to the CNS. South Africa is a Contracting Party (CP) to the CNS which obliges Parties to submit reports on the implementation of their obligations for "peer review" at meetings of the Parties to be held at the IAEA. The NNR coordinated the compilation of the Fourth South African National Report to this Convention, which was submitted to the IAEA in September 2007. The NNR presented the report at the Fourth CNS Review Meeting in April 2008.

- Joint Convention on Radioactive Waste Management and Spent Fuel Management.
The NNR coordinated the compilation, of the first South African National Report, on the management of spent fuel and radioactive waste which was submitted to the IAEA in October 2008. This report was presented and discussed at the Third Review Meeting of this Joint Convention, which took place from 11 to 22 May 2009. South Africa was assessed by the Country Group as fully complying with the obligations of the Joint Convention on Radioactive Waste Management and Spent Fuel Management.

- The NNR actively participates in the following committees of the IAEA
- Commission on Safety Standards (CSS)
- Nuclear Safety Standards Committee (NUSSC)
- Waste Safety Standards Committee (WASSC)
- Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC)
- Transport Safety Standards Committee (TRANSSC)

- Cooperation with other regulators via the Multinational Design Evaluation Programme (MDEP)
The MDEP serves as a platform to facilitate cooperation among nuclear regulators involved in the safety review of new reactor designs which are intended for construction in worldwide markets or at least in more than one country. Regulators from USA, France, China, Japan, South Korea, Canada, UK, Russia, Finland and South Africa as well as the IAEA participates in the MDEP initiative. The NNR participates in the Multinational Design Evaluation Programme (MDEP), which serves to establish contact between regulators that are facing similar challenges in terms of licensing new reactor designs.
|
- The NNR is a member of the Network of Regulators of Countries with small nuclear programmes (NERS)
- The NNR participates in the regulators group of Framatome power reactors (FRAREG)
- The NNR is represented on the IAEA’s International Nuclear Liability Expert Group (INLEX)
