International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will organise the International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century, in co-operation with the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from 30 October to 1 November 2017. The event will be hosted by the Government of the United Arab Emirates through the Ministry of Energy and Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation.

The conference aims to generate high-level dialogue on the role of nuclear power in meeting future energy demand, contributing to sustainable development and mitigating climate change. For more information, please visit the event website.

The 61st IAEA General Conference side event to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Joint Convention, which first took place on 5 September 1997. The Joint Convention is the only international legally binding instrument to address on a global scale the safety of spent fuel and radioactive waste management. Delegates from five IAEA Member States shared their experience related to nuclear safety at this commemorative event.

The 4th Multi-National Design Evaluation Programme Conference (MDEP) on New Reactor Design Activities was hosted by the United Kingdom Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR) at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London United Kingdom from 12-13 September 2017.

IAEA Technical Meeting on Challenges and Good Practices in Safety and Security Communication in Vienna.

18 Members states participated at the Technical Meeting on Challenges and Good Practices in Safety and Security Communication in Vienna, 28-31 August 2017. The meeting was held under the framework of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network (GNSSN) and was aimed at solving communication challenges faced by member states. Opening remarks were given by IAEA Deputy DDG of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security: Mr Juan Carlos Lentijo. The meeting was chaired by the Manager Communications and Stakeholder Relations of the NNR, South Africa: Mr Gino Moonsamy.

As part of the learner outreach programme the NNR held an information sharing exhibitionwhich is part of the stakeholder outreach at the regulatory conference. The exhibition took place over Thursday and Friday with a total of 16 exhibitors from the nuclear industry. Over 800 learners were received during these two days from townships such as Alexandra, Soweto, Riverlea - Nasrec, Brits,Randfontein, Soshanguve and Attridgeville.

KINS and NNR information sharing bilateral meeting.

The NNR recently launched the CNSS (Centre of Excellence for Nuclear Safety and Security) and has thereby embarked on a benchmarking information sharing programme with local and international counterparts. The NNR convened the meeting with KINS (Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety) as a side event build up to the regulatory conference. The meeting was attended by high level officials and senior technical experts.
